Current TV Highlights Ex-Gay Testimony as Staff Pick of the Day

Agree to Disagree   When we launched Current TV back in August, everyone assumed we were a liberal television network because our chairman is former Vice President Al Gore. The goal of Current was always to open up an international conversation by creating a platform for anyone to contribute. Looking at the diversity of people and views in our online community, I think we have begun to accomplish this.

Today's pick is a pod with a very controversial message. It is an interview with Mike Ensley, who is described by VC2 producer Bob D. as a "former homosexual saved by grace, and now living in freedom from homosexuality." In the pod, Ensley talks about the Exodus ministry, which offers "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ." I found the interview fascinating. I just ask that everyone please keep your comments on this video constructive, especially if you disagree with the message.

"Elizabeth Baier failed to understand that even though I made the choice to walk away from my homosexuality, I never chose those same-sex attractions in the first place ("Conferences debate homosexulality," May7). In fact, homosexuality is the result of many factors, which include family dynamics, sexual abuse and personality, but I do not believe the feelings are a choice.

The roots of same-sex attraction are complex, and those feelings often stretch back as far as a gay man or lesbian can remember, often leading them to the conclusion that they were born that way. Unfortunately, such an assumption frequently prevents those dissatisfied with their homosexuality from pursuing change, which is possible for those who are committe to the pursuit.

I walked that path many years ago, and so have many of my friends and colleagues. Our Love Won Out conference provides that hope to others, as well as to their family and friends."

"The legislation known as SB 1437 requires California education officials to re-write textbooks to include "gay" themes and homosexual people, positively emphasizing their contributions and their place in history. It  also bans any negative reference to homosexuals based on religious beliefs, which is why Bob Knight of the Culture and Family Institute sees the law as an attack on biblical values.

The people behind the language in SB 1437 have taken a decidedly pro-homosexual  position, Knight points out. "They specifically say in the bill that other opinions have to be resisted, including sectarian or denominational opinions about homosexuality that would put (the homosexual lifestyle) in a negative light," he says.

"In other words," Knight explains, "they're saying, 'Whatever your faith teaches you is wrong. In our tax-supported schools, we're going to create a new religion. We're going to say what's right and wrong regarding sexual conduct."

In 1998 he brought into his church a new assistant, the Rev. Thomas Johnson, 48, a former evangelical pastor from the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod where he had been a pastor for eight years...Then, St. Mark's was the largest attended parish in the whole Diocese of Wyoming. Now it is a church in decline. Today it is a mere shadow of its former self. While Casper is the center of the state and the largest city next to Cheyenne with a large population center, the parish became the victim of its revisionist bishop's utterances and theology, and people began to leave."

"Students should not leave public high school without learning of the Stonewall Riots, the murder of Harvey Milk, and the activists' response to the AIDS crisis. Those watershed moments in gay history are milestones in American history, and schools that overlook them provide their students with incomplete educations.

But state Senate Democrats went too far last week by passing a bill that would require social science textbooks sold in California to include the significant contributions of gay, bisexual, and transgendered people. That broad directive uses intolerance to fight intolerance for political, instead of educational, gains.

The sexual behavior of historical figures-- and we mean this for straights as much as for gays-- often bears no relevance to why their names appear in textbooks. Forcing an awkward disclaimer after the name of a noted scientist or politician_--"who was gay," or "who had a sex-change operation" or "who cheated on his wife" -- creates relevancy where it does not naturally exist."

ORLANDO, Fla. - Matthew Walker was always teased as a kid for being small, awkward and different. He felt different, too, but wasn't sure exactly why.

He must've been about 7 or 8 years old when he pointed toward a bouncer at a country music festival in Branson, Mo., telling his brother something like, "You know, if I was a girl I would date him."

By the time he got to Oklahoma State University, Walker was dating guys. But now, at age 34, he has been out of homosexuality for more than seven years.

He's one of thousands of former homosexuals who enlisted the help of an Orlando-based Christian group called Exodus International, an organization with 135 member ministries in the United States that works to "heal" gays and lesbians through prayer, counseling and group therapy.

The ministry is at the forefront of an increasingly high-profile "ex-gay" movement that claims it's possible to leave homosexuality behind, and estimates it has successfully treated tens of thousands of people since it began three decades ago in San Francisco.

Chambers is quick to point out that Exodus isn't about "curing" anyone or "turning people straight." In fact, many who go through the program might never have a heterosexual relationship, he says.

Instead, it's about refraining from activities that violate their beliefs - in God or anything else - and addressing "unwanted homosexuality."

"These are people who have identified that they struggle with same-sex attractions and are conflicted about that, and they want to find some sort of level of support and ability to overcome those feelings, move beyond them or live with them in conjunction with their Christianity," Chambers said. ...

"The California State Senate passed a law Thursday that would require public schools to teach homosexual, bisexual, and transgender history, prompting immediate criticism from pro-family groups across the nation.

“This is just another example of how radical the State Senate has become,” said Karen England, Executive Director of Capitol Resource Institute, whose group said the legislation “seeks to indoctrinate innocent children caught in the tug-of-war between traditional families and the outrageous homosexual agenda.”

Senate Bill 1437, sponsored by democratic senator Sheila Kuehl, modifies current law to prohibit the state Board of Education or any public school body from adopting texts that contain information that reflects negatively on race, ethnicity, gender, disability, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation. "A new law may force nations in the European Union to accept same-sex unions from other nations. The European Free Movement Directive entered into legal force last week and it requires EU member states to grant residency to homosexuals who are not citizens if their partner is a citizen of an EU country.

The directive grants family reunification rights to same-sex partners when one of the partners resides in an EU country that gives legal recognition to same-sex unions. But EU countries without same-sex marriage or partnership laws are not let off the hook. Though not automatically required to give legal recognition to same-sex unions such nations are obligated under the new law to perform an investigation into the stability of same-sex couples seeking reunification rights. If a relationship is deemed "real and durable," then national authorities are required to facilitate entry and residence for the gay partner who is a non-citizen."

"A conservative group is criticizing CBS Television for airing a pro-homosexual public service announcement during a daytime soap opera. The network was to air the PSA at the end of today's episode of As the World Turns, which featured a teen character who tells his parents he is homosexual.

The PSA urges viewers to "take a stand against the discrimination and prejudice faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people." The spot is all part of a campaign by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) called "Be an ally and a friend."

Andrea Lafferty, executive director of the Traditional Values Coalition (TVC), says her group is unhappy with CBS's decision to use daytime television to promote homosexuality among teens. "Traditional Values Coalition thinks this is wrong," she says. "They also think it's unfair."

"Syphilis rates in blacks, women and babies declined significantly between 1999 and 2004 but continued to rise overall, driven by a dramatic jump in infections among gay and bisexual men, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.

About 64% of all the new syphilis cases in 2004 were in men who had engaged in homosexual activity, according to the CDC. That group made up 5% of the syphilis cases in 1999.

Overall, the syphilis rates nationwide rose from 2.4 cases per 100,000 in 1999 to 2.7 per 100,000 in 2004.

"Increases in gay and bisexual men are overshadowing the decreases," Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Disease and Tuberculosis Prevention, said at a national conference on sexually transmitted diseases in Jacksonville, Fla."

"An unusually virulent form of chlamydia has emerged in the United States, primarily among gay men, after an outbreak in Europe two years ago, federal researchers said Wednesday.

There are about 80 confirmed cases in the U.S., but infectious-disease experts fear the actual number is substantially larger because this form of chlamydia is difficult to diagnose and many physicians are not aware of its existence.

Officials are concerned because the disease, like many other sexually transmitted diseases, can accelerate the spread of HIV infections and perhaps enhance replication of HIV in people who are co-infected."

"Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has angered supporters in the gay and lesbian community by stating that his party opposes gay marriage.

Appearing on the Christian Broadcasting Network’s program "The 700 Club” on Wednesday, Dean declared: "The Democratic Party platform from 2004 says that marriage is between a man and a woman. That's what it says. I think where we may take exception with some religious leaders is that we believe in inclusion, that everybody deserves to live with dignity and respect, and that equal rights under the law are important.”

Dean, however, "misrepresented” the party platform, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, which has returned a $5,000 contribution from the Democratic Party in a protest over Dean’s remarks."

Headlines tout a new study reaveals a biological link to homosexuality, but the author says her research is being taken out of context.

A Swedish team claims that lesbian brains react differently to the smell of pheromones than do the brains of straight women. Is this the “gay gene” activists have been waiting for? Grove City College Psychologist Warren Throckmorton responds.

“This study has nothing to say about the cause of that response. It has nothing to say about how those findings got the way they did.”

Throckmorton says the differences could be a conditioned response. But an AP reporter wrote “It’s a finding that adds weight to the idea that homosexuality has a physical underpinning and is not learned behavior.” To that statement, study author Ivanka Savic replied, “This is incorrect and not stated in the paper.”

“The most charitable explanation is that he simply didn’t understand it.”

Throckmorton says it’s more likely the media was looking for a simple answer like, ‘You’re born that way.’ Exodus International (edit -  Membership Director) Randy Thomas is used to the media bias.

“What usually happens is that the media spins it into some sort of social-political statement, instead of actually looking at the science that is going on.”

The study does open the possibility that homosexuality has a biological component.

“Either way, as a former homosexual, I know that my genes are not tyrannical over me. Even if it were proven to be genetic, I am free in Christ.”

At this point, science is a long way from that proof.

"The Liberty Counsel has released a statement concerning their defense of Christian Businessman Tim Bono and his refusal to duplicate pro-gay propoganda videos.

"Liberty Counsel has agreed to defend Tim Bono of Bono Film and Video who, on April 18, 2006, was ordered by the Arlington Human Rights Commission ("Commission") to duplicate two pro-homosexual videos by lesbian activist Lilli M. Vincenz.

Tim Bono was contacted by Lilli Vincenz via email to reproduce two documentaries entitled Gay and Proud and Second Largest Minority. Mr. Bono informed Ms. Vincenz that his company does not duplicate material that is obscene, could embarrass employees, hurt the company's reputation or that runs counter to the company's Christian and ethical values. He refused to do the job because he did not want to violate his biblical values by helping promote homosexuality.

Ms. Vincenz asked the Commission to force Bono to duplicate her videos. On April 18, 2006, the Commission ordered Mr. Bono to acquiesce to Vincenz's request. The Order states that if Mr. Bono refuses to do the job "after a reasonable amount of time, the Commission can reassemble to discuss why the remedy was not done." The Commission could then forward the case to the full county Board of Commissioners and ask for permission to file a discrimination complaint in Arlington Circuit Court.

Although Vincenz argues that Mr. Bono refused to duplicate the videos because of her "sexual orientation," that allegation is demonstrably false. The titles alone revealed that the videos were pure propaganda promoting a homosexual agenda. Mr. Bono does not inquire into a person's sexual practices as a prerequisite to provide services, nor does Bono Film and Video refuse to provide services to persons based on their "sexual orientation" or practices. However, Mr. Bono has just as much right to refuse to duplicate videos which promote the homosexual agenda as he has the right to refuse to duplicate obscenity, pornography or hate speech. "

"A coalition of evangelical United Methodist women is protesting a keynote speaker at a large event for Methodist women beginning tonight in Anaheim, California. The denomination's Women's Division is being accused of defying church law by inviting a lesbian activist to address the gathering.

On Saturday morning, lesbian activist and musician Emily Saliers of the group "Indigo Girls" will speak to more than 8,000 women at the United Methodist Women's Assembly. Saliers will appear with her father, Don, a professor at Candler School of Theology. The event takes place every four years and is a gathering of female leaders with the United Methodist Church (UMC)."

"A civil rights group has sued the Sampson County school board, claiming a ninth-grader was wrongfully suspended this week for disregarding a warning not to express his Christian faith.Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund say students at Midway High School were allowed to participate in the April 26th Day of Silence, an event promoted by the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network.

The group says student Benjamin Arthurs was refused permission to wear a Day of Truth shirt on the following day and distribute cards presenting a Christian viewpoint on homosexual behavior during non-instructional time.

He was suspended Monday after ignoring the warning."

"A North Carolina-based ministry is planning a series of conferences geared toward church pastors, staff members, and lay leaders in an effort to better equip them to minister to those who want to leave the homosexual lifestyle.

Tim Wilkins is a former homosexual who now runs Cross Ministry, which helps to equip churches to evangelize and disciple the homosexual. One of the ways Cross Ministry achieves its goal is through conferences that convey -- through personal testimony, workshops, and literature -- the reality of change for those struggling with same-sex attraction. This summer, Wilkins' ministry will hold a series of one-day conferences under the banner of "More Than Words."

Wilkins explains that the conferences will equip Christians how to better ministry to homosexuals. "The conference itself is [subtitled] 'Walking People Out of Homosexuality' -- not ... 'Walking Out of Homosexuality,'" the ministry leader explains. "If we used the title 'Walking Out of Homosexuality,' the implication ... would be that the conference is only for those who are dealing personally, in their own lives, with homosexuality."

After taking her daughters to the Tuesday stop of FOB's Black Clouds and Underdogs Tour at the Cricket Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina (see "Fall Out Boy Start Divulging New Tour Dates — The Real Ones, That Is"), that mother was apparently so upset by what she termed Wentz's "personal political testimony" that she wrote the band's label to complain and declare her moral outrage.

"The ticket said 'all ages,' and your band was very foul-mouthed and anti-morals. Charlotte is not the demoralized city that liberal San Francisco and other cities across the North and West are," the e-mail read. "I had looked forward to this concert with my girls for months [and] I didn't spend over $200 on gas, food and, unfortunately, shirts for you to give your own personal political testimony. ... This was a concert, not some liberal homosexual rally."

"The American university as a “marketplace of ideas” is an old and appealing concept.  However, case after case of liberal faculty and students stifling free speech and advocating leftist indoctrination on campus...A remarkable example of this is currently taking place at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  With the help of the ADF, two students, senior Ruth Malhotra and junior Orit Sklar, recently filed a Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit against the university for its “blatantly unconstitutional” targeted speech codes, its discrimination against political and particular religious groups through student activity fee allocation, and its evaluation and endorsement of certain religious views through the school-sponsored “Safe Space” program...This regulation of speech is ostensibly to reassure students that they need not fear slurs and attacks as a result of expressing their views in this “marketplace of ideas.”  In practice, however, the administrators who are responsible for enforcing this policy, and who are the ultimate arbiters of what constitutes free speech and what constitutes a speech code violation (or, in essence, what violates students’ phantom, “right” to never feel offended or uncomfortable), have largely decided that the only existing “intolerance” and “hate speech” at their institution is mainstream campus conservatism. "First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, is taking a pro-active step to reach the homosexual community with the truth of the gospel. On Saturday, May 6, the church is hosting a one-day conference titled "More Than Words" (MTW). The conference is an event that features Tim Wilkins, founder of Cross Ministry in 1996 and creator of the MTW conference.

Wilkins himself left the homosexual lifestyle more than 20 years ago, so he is able to empathize with those who are trapped in homosexuality and feel there is no hope. Wilkins, his wife and three daughters live in North Carolina where Cross Ministry is based in Wake Forest.

" government commission has ordered a man who runs a video duplicator business to do a job for a lesbian activist after he initially refused because, as a Christian, he did not want to help promote homosexuality.

According to a report by Concerned Women for America, Tim Bono of Bomo Film and Video in Arlington, Va., did not want to violate his biblical values by helping promote two pro-homosexual films lesbian activist Lillian Vincenz wanted duplicated.

Bono Film & Video informs potential customers that the firm does not duplicate material that it deems obscene, could embarrass employees, hurt the company’s reputation or that runs counter to the company’s Christian and ethical values, Bono told the Family Policy Network, which is working to organize a lawsuit against Arlington County."

"A homosexual rights group is suing the governor of Kentucky in order to prevent the state from giving $11 million to the Baptist-affiliated University of the Cumberlands after the school expelled a homosexual student. The governor, in turn, asked a judge to determine the constitutionality of using taxpayer money for private institutions.

Christina Gilgor, executive director of the Kentucky Fairness Alliance, said the governor’s plan to give $10 million to help establish a pharmacy school and another $1 million in scholarships for future pharmacy students is an “unconstitutional appropriation and use of public funds” for “a sectarian and denominational school that treats Kentucky citizens unequally,” according to the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper."

"Gay marriage" may be legal in four countries and one American state but, so far, homosexuals are in no hurry for commitment.

A new study by the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy, headed by author and researcher Maggie Gallagher, shows that the percentage of homosexuals opting for "marriage" is small."
