COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Focus on the Family will bring its international Love Won Out conference to Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale on May 6. The one-day event is designed to educate and equip attendees on the issue of homosexuality and provide help for those struggling -- and those whose loved ones struggle -- with unwanted same-sex attractions.
"The issues surrounding homosexuality have become so politicized in recent years, that it is easy for people to forget how deeply personal these matters are. We hope to change that," said Mike Haley, host of the conference. "Love Won Out is a conference that reaches out to those that are hurting and offers them a message of understanding and of hope."
South Florida motorists have already been greeted by a regional billboard campaign, sharing one of the conference messages: "I questioned homosexuality; change is possible; discover how." Similar billboards, featuring the faces of former homosexual men and women, have been defaced prior to recent conferences in Houston and St. Louis.
"It is unfortunate," Haley said, "but our message if often met with intimidation, threats and protests. The gay-activist community generally calls for 'tolerance.' But, as a former homosexual, I can attest to the fact that I have faced much more intolerance since leaving homosexuality than before."
Led primarily by those who have left homosexuality themselves, along with researchers and therapists from across the nation, Love Won Out delivers the distinctive message that change is possible for those unsatisfied with the gay life. Conference sessions also address those who have a homosexual friend or loved one, and offer suggestions on how churches and individuals can demonstrate love and compassion in those relationships.
"Love Won Out's cornerstone continues be the hope and healing that is found in Jesus Christ," said Melissa Fryrear, a conference speaker and former lesbian. "Many attendees are struggling to maintain the balance between holding onto their beliefs and loving a gay family member or friend. The conference will encourage and equip them to do just that."
