Vancouver MP Bill Siksay sees a need for better legal protection for people caught up in gender issues. The NDPer has introduced a private member's bill, given first reading in May, that would amend the Human Rights Act to include gender identity and gender expression as prohibited grounds of discrimination. "In terms of formal or legislative equality, trans rights are the next frontier," says Gilles Marchildon, executive director of Egale Canada, a gay, lesbian, bi and trans advocacy group in Ottawa.
