After the Southern Decadence festival, usually hosted by New Orleans gay population, was cancelled by Katrina's arrival, organizers decided to move the event, which includes five days of parades, pub crawls, public nudity and sexual activity, to Lafayette. However, Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel warned them that individuals set on parading through his city streets in celebration of “Southern Decadence” would be arrested by police. Mr. Durel explained that parade permits were being restricted in order to alleviate stress on the already over loaded policing agencies in his city. When Durel was asked about removing permit restriction so that a sense of normalcy could be restored, he replied: “I don’t consider anything that’s got the word decadence in it to be normalcy.”- LifeSiteNews.com, Sept. 9, 2005
