Orlando, FL- August 10, 2005 One of the largest evangelical publications, Charisma magazine, named Alan Chambers, President of Exodus International, as one of the top emerging leaders in the American church in its newly released issue this month. The feature article, entitled “30 Emerging Voices,” is a national look at a new generation of leaders changing the way evangelicals engage individuals both inside and outside the church.
“It has been my privilege to be a part of the tremendous progress the evangelical church has made in demonstrating a more compassionate and truthful approach to those caught in homosexuality,” said Chambers. “Those of us who have come out of gay life know the deep rejection and emptiness many are experiencing in it today, but we have also experienced the overwhelming love and mercy of Jesus Christ.”
Chambers says opportunities to work with respected evangelical leaders such as Rev. D. James Kennedy, Dr. Richard Land, Chuck Colson and Dr. James Dobson have helped expand the role of the church in regards to the critical issue of homosexuality. Exodus is a regular participant in Focus on the Family’s Love Won Out conferences — an event designed to educate the public on the roots and causes of homosexuality. Chuck Colson also released a new book this year, The Good Life, that devoted an entire chapter to the issue of homosexuality by highlighting the life story of Randy Thomas, Membership Director for Exodus International.
“We are seeing an explosion of interest in our work both inside and outside the church and much of that can be attributed to leaders who have gone before us and have provided a podium by which to expand our message,” said Chambers. “We continue to hear from thousands of individuals who hunger for unchanging hope and truth and we are excited to share it at this critical time in our culture’s history.”
