BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A weekend rally intended to gain momentum for a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage was hijacked by protesters.
The rally in this typically conservative San Joaquin Valley city was organized by Sen. Roy Ashburn, R-Bakersfield, as part of his "Traditional Family Values" campaign.
But it didn't turn out quite as planned. About 80 protesters surrounded the site on Saturday, often drowning out the speakers who were using microphones.
