The outgoing president of the Southern Baptist Convention expects delegates to the denomination's annual meeting to strongly endorse a constitutional ban on homosexual marriage. But Rev. Jack Graham does not expect next week's meeting in Indianapolis to consider a resolution urging Southern Baptists to remove their children from "godless" public schools. Graham, who is completing a two-year term, says he would rather encourage Baptist teachers and administrators "to be salt and light" in the public schools. Asked about the Episcopal Church's consecration of an openly homosexual bishop, Graham says he prays that Bible-believing Episcopalians can either change their church or divide it and move on. The outgoing SBC leader also hopes that his own denomination will consider changing its name to reflect the "national and international presence of Southern Baptists."
...The first openly homosexual bishop in the Episcopal Church says it's an "extraordinary miracle" that the Diocese of New Hampshire chose him a year ago. Gene Robinson says 15 or 20 years ago, no one would have imagined such a thing. He tells Associated Press that homosexual men and women were fighting for what he calls "a few crumbs under the table" -- never believing that they would be "invited to the table much less to sit at the head of it." His approval to the post has caused some Anglican churches in Africa to cut off communion with the Episcopal Church. But Robinson says he is baffled that a "tiny congregation in the northern part of Nigeria is affected all that much by who the bishop in New Hampshire is."
It appears John Kerry is working hard to get the homosexual vote this fall -- and hundreds of thousands of dollars of their money. In what some supporters are calling an unprecedented effort, Kerry's campaign has launched an outreach drive that includes "Kerry for President" booths in more than 60 "Gay Pride" events nationwide. And in what the Kerry people are calling the "Pride Across America" campaign, Kerry will promote the fact that he opposes a constitutional marriage amendment protecting Bible-based marriage, supports Vermont-style "civil unions," and supports lifting the ban on homosexuals in the military. Baptist Press reports Kerry has also launched what is called a "Ripple of Hope" campaign in an effort to raise $500,000 within the homosexual community by the end of June.
