Who are they and what are their reasons for rebelling?
More than two dozen religious groups have signed a letter calling on Congress to reject the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA).
The letter is signed by leaders of groups such as the Episcopal Church USA, the Presbyterian Church USA and the Disciples of Christ. It alleges that the FMA “reflects a fundamental disregard for individual civil rights.”
The Rev. Barry Lynn, who heads Americans United for Separation of Church and State, helped orchestrate the letter.
"Religious groups and religious individuals in America have very differing views about marriage and what is or is not acceptable within the church," Lynn said. "I don't think the federal government should be amending the Constitution to reflect only one religious viewpoint."
