How would an openly gay athlete be accepted in a pro-football locker room? For 24 years, Lindsy McLean found out, more or less. The now-retired San Francisco 49ers trainer's sexual orientation was an open secret among those close to the team. Now that Mr. McLean has gone public in interviews with the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat and ESPN the Magazine, a larger question looms: Has pro sports - among the most homophobic work environments in this country - evolved enough for others to come out?
