Mayor Gavin Newsom lit a fire under the City Hall bureaucrats with his jaw-dropping decision last week to start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. And it hasn't stopped burning yet. In less than a week, more than 4,000 gays and lesbians took their marriage vows, and everyone from sheriff's deputies and custodians, to clerks and computer wizards on the city payroll pitched in on their own time. Never have so many weddings been performed at City Hall in so short a time.
