Canadian Pastor Fined; Christians Banned from Voicing Biblical Opposition

From WorldNetDaily:

A Canadian tribunal ordered a Christian pastor to renounce his faith and never again express moral opposition to homosexuality, according to a new report.

In a decision dated May 30 in the penalty phase of the quasi-judicial proceedings run by the Alberta Human Rights Tribunal, evangelical pastor Stephen Boisson was banned from expressing his biblical perspective of homosexuality and ordered to pay $5,000 for "damages for pain and suffering" as well as apologize to the activist who complained of being hurt...

"In this case there is no specific individual who can be compensated as there is no direct victim who has come forward," [lawyer Lori G. Andreachuk] wrote.

However, that did not stop her from ordering the payment anyway.

And as for the future, she wrote:

"Mr. Boissoin and The Concerned Christian Coalition Inc. shall cease publishing in newspapers, by e-mail, on the radio, in public speeches, or on the Internet, in future, disparaging remarks about gays and homosexuals. Further, they shall not and are prohibited from making disparaging remarks in the future about … Lund or … Lund's witnesses relating to their involvement in this complaint. Further, all disparaging remarks versus homosexuals are directed to be removed from current Web sites and publications of Mr. Boissoin and The Concerned Christian Coalition Inc..."

Foley Fiasco

By now I’m sure you have heard about the latest Washington scandal. Republican Congressman Mark Foley of Florida, long rumored to be a homosexual, suddenly resigned his seat in Congress late Friday afternoon after news outlets reported that he had been sending sexually explicit messages to teenage male pages.  This morning, Foley’s attorney announced that he has entered an alcoholic rehabilitation center.

The instant messages Foley sent were obscene and disgusting.  Resignation was the only appropriate response for someone who had so abused the public trust.  It is unconscionable that any person would attempt to sexually seduce a child, but given Foley’s position as co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus, this scandal is even more outrageous.  Ironically, the FBI has been called in to investigate Foley for possible criminal charges against Internet sexual predators based on a law he helped to write!

The Democrat leadership in Congress, leftwing blogs, and their media allies, not surprisingly, are taking the Foley scandal and attempting to use it to attack Republicans generally.  Democrat campaign committees are suggesting that the Republican leadership, including Speaker Hastert, knew
about this mess and didn’t do anything about it.  Speaker Hastert denies that.

All we know for sure is that some earlier e-mails judged to be “overly friendly” were known to some in Congress.  But the worst material, which was obscene and sexually explicit, was not discovered until last week.  It was that material which resulted in Foley’s immediate resignation.

Speaker Hastert sent a letter yesterday to the Department of Justice demanding a formal investigation of “any and all individuals who may have been aware of this matter—be they Members of Congress, employees of the House of Representatives, or anyone outside the Congress.”  We join him in that demand.  That investigation should examine anyone of any party since there are rumors today that some Democrat leaders also knew and chose to wait five weeks before an election for their own advantage.

Hypocrisy?

As I have written before, neither party has a monopoly on virtue or vice. As an evangelical Christian, I believe one of the central tenets of my faith is that all men are sinners, which is why we require the saving grace of the Son of God.  For those charging hypocrisy in the Republican Party, I would only remind them that Mark Foley has been forced out of the House, as he should have been.  In contrast, former Democrat Congressman Gerry Studds of Massachusetts remained in the House after admitting to homosexual conduct with a teenage page, and won reelection numerous times.  Rep. Barney Frank was implicated in a homosexual prostitution scandal run out of his house and continues to be a leader in the Democrat Party today.

One other point.  The national Democrat Party is strongly supported by the radical homosexual rights movement and organizations like the ACLU, both of which have consistently argued that age of consent laws should be dramatically liberalized so that what Rep. Foley was apparently trying to do would no longer be against the law or even considered shameful.  So, who is really engaged in hypocrisy in this controversy?

Bigger Picture

Let’s put politics aside for a second and look at what is happening to our country.  Our popular culture has for years been making children the objects of sexual desire.  Britney Spears dresses provocatively and within months countless ten year-old girls are running around dressed the same way.  Hollywood routinely exploits young children sexually, as does Madison Avenue.

Groups like NAMBLA, the North American Man-Boy Love Association, continue to be given positions in “gay rights” parades and, without shame, continue to promote their governing slogan, “Sex by eight or it’s too late.”  In addition, the entire culture, as well as many of our schools and universities, teaches the notion that there are no things such as right or wrong – that all these things are merely choices in the “lifestyle cafeteria.”  At the end of the day, our virtue deficit is going to lay us low long before our budget deficit does.

Bottom Line

This latest scandal in Washington is just further evidence that the pro-family agenda is desperately needed for the country.  We are the ones who have argued that human sexuality should be channeled through marriage.  We are the ones who have argued that marriage is between one man and one woman.  We are the ones who have argued that schools should teach kids how to read and write and stop handing out condoms and birth control pills.  We are the ones who say that all our children should be welcomed into the world under law.  We are the ones who say there are reliable standards of right and wrong.  And we are the ones who have led the charge against the sexualization of our children.

If the Foley scandal wakes up both parties to a need to rediscover the values of family and faith, then maybe something good can come out of this mess.

Christians & Same Sex Attracted Iranians Face Similar Persecution

From PJ Media

Dutch Immigration and Integration Minister Rita Verdonk—who has higher political ambitions—temporarily halts the deportation of Iranian gay and Christian refugees, bowing to pressure from the greater portion of the Dutch Parliament. Pieter Dorsman: “The pre-existing notion that gays or Christians could somehow be safe in a nation like Iran is simply too absurd to seriously entertain…”

If you are Christian in Iran ... you get stoned to death.

If you have same sex attraction in Iran ... you get stoned to death

If you are a Christian who struggles with same sex attraction in Iran ... you get the point.

We have our "culture war" issues and battles over public policy here in the United States that are very important.  Even so, we have the freedom to self-determine the course of our lives and how we identify.  We have great freedom in what we can say and the course of our faith and worship.  Often, here in the United States, we are not grateful for the freedom we have to discuss issues of faith and sexuality.  In many parts of the world, those who are Christian and/or struggling with homosexuality are brutally tortured and murdered.

We must keep this in mind for perspective and seek out ways to intercede (prayer and other ways) for our Christian siblings and for those being murdered because of their sexual orientation.

Homophobia is not some off the cuff comment about Tinky Winky.  Homophobia is what you see happening in Iran.  I am grateful for the Dutch government finally giving asylum to those fleeing Iran.  I pray that those who want to find Christ will and those who want to overcome homosexuality will be allowed their right to self-determine that path for their lives as well.

Note: The quote above lumps everyone with same sex attraction into a "gays" label.  It must be noted that many with same sex attraction do not have to identify as gay nor adopt a gay defined worldview.

Pro-family legal experts say Swedish Pastor Ake Green's fate is in God's hands, not in the hands of the Swedish Supreme Court — but a verdict in his case could come from the Scandinavian nation's highest tribunal this week or next.

Providentially, the trial last week in Stockholm provided Green and his legal team the opportunity to present the biblical view of homosexuality before a national television audience, according to Thomas Jacobson, Focus on the Family's representative to the United Nations. "Church leaders, politicians and an American religious rights group are rallying behind a pastor who is to appear before an Alberta human rights tribunal accused of exposing gays to hatred.

In a letter published in the Red Deer Advocate in June 2002, Stephen Boissoin wrote that homosexual rights activists and those who defend them are as immoral as pedophiles, drug dealers and pimps.

After considering the case for three years, the human rights commission will finally hear a complaint filed against Boissoin by Darren Lund, a University of Calgary professor. Lund contends the letter contravenes Alberta's human rights law."- John Cotter, CNews-Canada, Oct. 16, 2005

Coalition Requests DOJ Investigation of Its Attorneys at Philadelphia Homosexual Event

Were They Acting as DOJ Officials or Homosexual Activists?

To: National Desk

Contact: Any Skeen of the Traditional Values Coalition, 202-547-8570

WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 /Christian Wire Service/ -- The chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition contacted the Justice Department today and requested an investigation of media reports that DOJ attorneys attending a homosexual event in Philadelphia encouraged police there to arrest only Christian protestors.

A source within the Justice Department told World Net Daily Justice Department attorneys taking part in OutFest, a homosexual event held annually in Philadelphia, counseled Philadelphia police to arrest Christian protestors.

“The protestors from the Christian group Repent America were the targets not the instigators of problems at the event,” said TVC Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon. “Surrounded by homosexual extremists holding up large pieces of poster board to block the public’s view of their message, police moved in and arrested the Christians. This is incredible!

‘But today’s report spells out an even worse scenario. The police side with the homosexual harassers after being advised to do so by federal Justice Department lawyers, homosexuals who were participants in the event.

“In view of this police misconduct, a citizen should be able to go to the Justice Department for an impartial investigation of this flagrant civil rights violation. But homosexual Justice Department employees were there in Philadelphia and they were egging the police on.

“Who are these homosexual employees of the Justice Department and who assigned them to go to Philadelphia to harass law-abiding protestors?

“If you can’t get the police to enforce the law impartially and you can’t rely on the Justice Department to protect basic civil rights, who do you call? Zorro?
“Starting with Attorney General Ashcroft, I know there are many good and honest people at the Justice Department. They need to get this matter under control and they need to do it before Philadelphia-style justice condemns these good people to prison.”

Justice Department Must Intervene on Behalf of Philadelphia Christians, CWA Says

http://www.cwfa.org/articles/7167/CWA/freedom/index.htm

1/5/2005

Washington, D.C. – Concerned Women for America (CWA) urged the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to intervene on behalf of four Philadelphia Christian men who were arraigned today on “hate crime” felony charges stemming from a peaceful protest at a homosexual street event on October 10, 2004.

“The District Attorney’s office went berserk, saddling them with criminal charges including trying to incite a riot, even though the protesters were peaceful,” said Robert Knight, director of CWA’s Culture & Family Institute. “Their crime was to cite Bible verses, which a prosecutor called ‘hateful,’ and to urge homosexuals, like other sinners, to repent. It’s frightening to see religious persecution on American soil, especially in the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence. The Justice Department needs to step in and investigate this civil rights violation by the city of Philadelphia.”

Reggie White Granted The Lord's Victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--He was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was elected to the Pro Bowl a record 13 straight times, set a Super Bowl record with three sacks and retired in 2000 as the NFL's all-time leader in sacks. But Reggie White's life as a football legend and unashamed proclaimer of the Gospel -- which earned him the nickname "Minister of Defense" -- ended abruptly Dec. 26 at age 43.............White encountered much criticism following a 1998 speech to the Wisconsin legislature. He presented the biblical position on many problems in society, including greed, sexual immorality, race relations and obscene movies and music. Homosexual rights activists were outraged when he said in the speech that homosexuality is a decision, not a race, and it should not be placed on par with the civil rights movement.

"Some people ask, 'Why did you jump on that subject?' Well, it was one to jump on because there are gay activists," White said in an interview with Focus on the Family's Citizen magazine after the speech. "You don't have men or women who commit adultery who are activists for adultery, or liars who are activists for lying.

"Gay activists are trying to force their agenda on our children and on society, and it bothers me," he said. "When you look at the gay agenda, their thing is that they deserve the same rights as other minorities, particularly black people. That is very offensive."

Exploiting Matthew Shepard

Matthew wasn't "gay" and "proud."  He was profoundly troubled.

You know there must be something happening when the New York Times praises ABC News for running "an intellectually brave episode" of the "20/20" show that has angered the homosexual lobby.  That means the Times found it convincing, and so did we.  In the November 27 show, "20/20" uncovered the truth about the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, widely depicted as a hate crime because he was a homosexual.  Almost everything we were told about this murder at the time by ABC, the Times and every other major news organization was false.

I'm amazed when seemingly intelligent people tell me they still think the American Civil Liberties Union is a group that fights for First Amendment freedoms no matter whose ox is being gored.

If that's the case, why is the ACLU not filing amicus briefs in Philadelphia where four Christians are facing 47 years in jail for expressing their free-speech rights?

. - “First, symbols of Christianity are removed from the public square; now, Christians are facing 47 years in prison because they preached the gospel in the public square. Stalin would be proud,” – Brian Fahling, AFA Center for Law and Policy Senior Trial Attorney.

Tupelo, MS - After a federal appeals court denied an emergency appeal to stop prosecution of 11 Christians on Tuesday, Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge William Austin Meehan ordered four of the Christians to stand trial on three felony (criminal conspiracy, ethnic intimidation, and riot) and five misdemeanor charges. If convicted, they could face up to 47 years in prison.

The Christians were arrested on October 10 for praying, singing, and reading scripture during an annual “gay pride” event known as “Outfest” in Philadelphia.

Since the federal courts did not intervene to halt the state prosecution, the last route for the Christians would be an appeal to the Supreme Court says the Christians’ attorney Brian Fahling, senior trial attorney for the American Family Association Center for Law & Policy.

“First, symbols of Christianity are removed from the public square, now, Christians are facing years in prison because they preached the gospel in the public square. Stalin would be proud,” Fahling said.

The federal appeals court in Philadelphia denied emergency relief despite video footage Fahling calls “undisputed evidence” that shows the Christians cooperating with police and continually being harassed by the Pink Angels, a group of homosexuals organized to impede the gospel message. Philadelphia city prosecutor in the case, Charles Ehrlich, attacked the Christians as “hateful” and referred to preaching the Bible as “fighting words,” the judge agreed.

Charges were dropped against the remaining seven apparently because they were not seen quoting scripture on the videotape.

The Philadelphia case represents another example of discrimination toward Christians,” said Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association national headquarters. “The past month has poured forth cases of Christian persecution seen in the higher education institution, public school systems, and the judicial court system.”

Philly Court Orders Four Christians to Trial; Emergency Appeal Likely

http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/12/152004a.asp

(AgapePress) - An attorney with a pro-family ministry says a judge's decision on Tuesday, ordering four Christians in Philadelphia to stand trial for witnessing at a homosexual pride event, is comparable to the atmosphere of the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s.

In October, 11 Christians were arrested as they were praying and reading scripture during the annual "gay pride" event known as "Outfest" in Philadelphia. Those in the group were charged with three felonies (criminal conspiracy, ethnic intimidation, and riot) and five misdemeanors. On Tuesday, charges were dropped against seven of the individuals; but Philadelphia Municipal Court Judge William Austin Meehan ordered the other four to stand trial on the charges. They were also banned from doing any type of evangelism within 100 yards of any "gay and lesbian event."

GLAAD: ABC'S Hindsight on Matthew Shepard's Murder Far Less Than '20/20'

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/041126/265173_1.html

Friday November 26, 3:01 pm ET

Executive Director Joan M. Garry: 'This Simply is Not a Credible Piece of Journalism'

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 26, 2004--In response to a piece airing tonight on ABC, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the family of Matthew Shepard today called on the media and the viewing public to scrutinize the sensationalistic claims and distortions offered by "20/20" in its attempt to rewrite the history of Shepard's murder case.

GLAAD and The Matthew Shepard Foundation have published a GLAAD Viewer's Guide to the program, featuring a detailed look at the journalistic problems with the piece, at http://www.glaad.org and at http://www.matthewshepard.org .

"This piece says much, much more about 20/20 than it does about the murder of Matthew Shepard," said GLAAD Executive Director Joan M. Garry. "20/20's misleading oversimplifications and distortions do a tremendous disservice to a complicated case. This simply is not a credible piece of journalism."

People with first-hand accounts of what happened in Laramie -- among them Judy Shepard, Dave O'Malley (the Laramie police captain whose comments to "20/20" are selectively represented), Moises Kaufman (author of The Laramie Project, whose team interviewed more than 200 residents of Laramie in 1998 and 1999), and Romaine Patterson (who was close friends with Matt during the last two years of his life) -- dispute the accuracy of "20/20's" piece.

"Dennis and I were dismayed and saddened by the tabloid nature of the show and its lack of serious reporting of facts in evidence," said Judy Shepard. "Though I was not permitted by 20/20 to view the segment, the copy made available to the press left all of my relevant comments regarding the direction of the show and the facts in this case on the cutting room floor. My remarks were reduced to a few very personal maternal comments taken out of context to make it appear as if I agreed with 20/20's theories. Nothing could be farther from the truth."

"My company and I spent more an year visiting Laramie and talking to the people there," said Moises Kaufman, "and what we learned and the stories we heard bear no resemblance to what I saw when I watched this piece."

GLAAD also is raising concerns about the initial media coverage and reviews of the program.

"Unfortunately, some TV writers are falling for this: hook, line and sinker," Garry says. "20/20 is relying on the fact that some reporters will accept its claims at face value and won't go back to the historical record to research the facts for themselves."

Among the serious flaws in "20/20's" report:

  • "20/20" does not put forward a single piece of incontrovertible evidence to back its assertion that drugs were the central cause of Matthew Shepard's murder. Its case is based on conjecture, sensational repetition of unsubstantiated claims, and sources whose credibility is highly dubious at best.
  • The show relies on interviews with sources seriously lacking in credibility, including but not limited to: Doc O'Connor, Kristen Price, Elaine Baker and Aaron McKinney -- all of whom offer stories that are contradicted by others and/or by the public record. In Price's case, her newly invented story suggests she may have committed perjury as well. It is doubtful that any credible news organization would use such sources as the foundation of a story.
  • "20/20" ignores critical facts to advance its claim that anti-gay bias played no role in Shepard's murder. The show fails to examine McKinney's confession to sheriffs' investigators, which was one of the key sources of information about the anti-gay bias element in the case. "20/20" also fails to acknowledge that the drug angle it presents as news received wide coverage in 1999 as part of McKinney's defense strategy and as part of a "Harper's" magazine story that explored many of the exact same themes.

On Nov. 9, GLAAD received a press release from "20/20" promoting the sweeps-month show. GLAAD's Garry then reached out to "20/20" Executive Producer David Sloan, raised serious concerns about the sensationalistic tone of the release, and requested a preview copy of the show -- a request Sloan declined. GLAAD subsequently secured a press screening copy from a source outside ABC.

"This was indeed a complex murder; no one has ever suggested otherwise," Garry concluded. "But for 20/20 to lay out a case based on speculation, innuendo, the avoidance of critical facts, sources lacking in basic credibility, and reliance on conflicting pieces of information is reckless journalism."

  • (NOTE: This information will be updated throughout the day at http:www.glaad.org. GLAAD also can provide contact information for Judy Shepard, Sean Maloney (Shepard's attorney and longtime adviser), Moises Kaufman, Dave O'Malley and Romaine Patterson.)

ABC 20/20 Report Says Matthew Shepard Killed During Robbery Not Anti-Gay Hate Crime

    http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2004/nov/04111208.html

NEW YORK, November 12, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The 1998 Matthew Shepard murder, portrayed as a hate crime because Shepard was homosexual, was in fact a bungled robbery and not motivated by hate, according to an ABC 20/20 investigation.

Shepard's murder set in motion a drive to promulgate new laws to protect homosexuals from discrimination, including the so-called hate crimes laws Bill C-250 in Canada, and a similar proposed law in the US.

20/20 interviewed the killers, Aaron McKinney and Russell A. Henderson for their exposé, which revealed that the two had made a bargain with the court that they would not speak to the media in exchange for an agreement sparing them the death penalty. They are both serving consecutive double life sentences.

Attorneys Say Christians Unjustly Arrested at Philly Homosexual Event

    http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/10/132004a.asp

    By Jenni Parker
    October 13, 200

(AgapePress) - Police arrested 11 Christians last Sunday in Pennsylvania for exercising their First Amendment rights at a homosexual pride celebration. The six men and five women from Repent America were jailed and charged under hate crimes legislation after attempting to do evangelistic outreach at "Outfest," a homosexual event that was being held on the public streets and sidewalks of Philadelphia.

Among the Christians taken into custody was Michael Marcavage, founder of Repent America. Just two days before the October 10 arrests, the American Family Association Center for Law & Policy had filed a lawsuit on behalf of Marcavage, alleging that the City of Philadelphia has a policy and practice of continually denying him his constitutional rights to free speech and free exercise of religion.

The lawsuit also claims the City has repeatedly threatened, intimidated, and arrested the Christian activist for merely proclaiming the gospel on the public ways. Sunday's events at Outfest would seem to substantiate these allegations.

PEDOPHILIA, or the sexual desire of an adult for a child, is now prevalent among Filipinos, according to the deputy chief of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

Testifying at a hearing called yesterday by the Senate committee on youth, women and family relations on the effect of the proliferation of pedophile materials on the increased sexual exploitation of minors, Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Mendoza said pornography involving Filipino children was now readily available in the local market.

Mendoza said the problem was bigger than what law enforcers had thought. He said that in combating child pornography and interlocking crimes such as child prostitution and rape, the government needed to study the organized crime behind pedophilia.

He defined organized crime as perpetrated by at least three people with the intent to gain profit.

"We're now crafting a national campaign plan to address this problem," Mendoza said, adding

that a heightened crackdown on smut tabloids, sexually charged shows, and pirated CDs on pornography would be implemented to curb the rising incidence of child prostitution.

An Evanston teachers union president and gay-rights activist was arrested Friday morning for allegedly trying to meet for sex with someone he thought was a 15-year-old boy, but was really an undercover police officer, Lake County Sheriff's police said.

Robert Carroll, 54, was charged with two counts of indecent solicitation of a child after police picked him up at about 8:50 a.m. in a wooded area near Waukegan.

Police began investigating Carroll in June when a detective, posing as a 15-year-old boy, met him in an Internet chat room. Over the next three months, police said, Carroll and the officer in character chatted about different topics, including sex. Carroll recently made arrangements with the "boy'' for the purposes of engaging in sex acts, police said.

Carroll is in his second year as president of the District Educators' Council for Evanston-Skokie School District 65. Prior to his election, he taught at Kingsley Elementary School, according to district Supt. Hardy Murphy.

Twice in the space of a week, young men have been found guilty of manslaughter after being the subject of homosexual advances. .....

The McNee verdict was greeted with far from universal acclaim. To some, it demonstrated that an underlying culture of homophobia pervades society; that men who kill other men and then say they did so because of their horror of homosexual relations could expect reduced charges. And that such a defence was not open to women.

This criticism, however, overlooks the fact that an attack on a person's sexuality gives rise to a particular fear. This response is, indeed, characteristic of both sexes. Furthermore, the provocation defence is gender-neutral. It has, for example, been used by women who have killed unfaithful husbands. Doubtless it may be available to a woman subjected to rape or other sexual assault. .....

The circumstances of attacks on a person's sexuality will, of course, vary greatly. Therefore, this area of the law will always be imprecise, and the subject of much debate. One thing is clear, however: there are no good grounds for making any distinction between homosexual and heterosexual assault.

It's a historic success, officer claims in appeal of conviction

    Posted: July 5, 2004

Does polygamy have a place in today's society?

Yes, says a former Utah police officer convicted of sex offenses in a town in which more than half of his ex-colleagues are practitioners of polygamy.

Hildale's Rodney Holm says plural marriage is a historic and current success.

In a 115-page brief filed with the Utah Supreme Court, an attorney for former Holm argues the practice of polygamy is a constitutional right that never produced the social ills claimed by its opponents. And, the brief says, monogamy is the minority way of life worldwide.

"Current demographics, domestic relations law, and religious diversity all accommodate plural marriage," attorney Rodney Parker wrote.

An eight-month investigation by the state of Utah has found more than half of the police officers in the southern town of Hildale practice polygamy – that is, having more than one spouse.

Swedish Pastor Sentenced to Month in Prison for Preaching Against Homosexuality

    Monday July 5, 2004

STOCKHOLM, July 5, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Ake Green, the pastor of a Swedish Pentecostal church in Kalmar, Sweden, has been sentenced to one month in prison by a Swedish court, for inciting hatred against homosexuals. Green was prosecuted in January for "hate speech against homosexuals" for a sermon he preached last summer citing Biblical references to homosexuality.

Sweden passed an equivalent to Canada's Bill C-250 last year -- a "hate crimes" law that forbids criticism of homosexuality. In a WorldNetDaily article, the author quotes from the church newspaper Kyrkans Tidning, in which the prosecutor in the case, Kjell Yngvesson, justifies the arrest of pastor

Meanwhile, Investigation Finds Accused Priests Still Active Around the World

(AgapePress) - In the wake of the report issued by the Catholic Church on the priest sex abuse scandal, a new book lays the blame for the abuse in a surprising place.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops recently released the results of a two-year investigation into the allegations that a significant number of priests had sexually abused children and teens over a period of more than 50 years. The study found that 4,392 Catholic priests had allegedly abused more than 10,000 victims in that time span.

The report also found that most of the perpetrators were homosexual priests, a revelation that angered homosexual-rights groups. However, openly homosexual author David France admits in his new book, Our Fathers: The Secret Life of the Catholic Church in an Age of Scandal, that the offenders were, in fact, homosexual.

"[W]e now know from talking to these priests [who molested teenagers]: they're gay," France told The Advocate, a magazine targeted to the homosexual community, adding, "And if they were gay men, we should ask ourselves why that was happening. What caused it?"

TORONTO -- Michael Briere was a software programmer with no criminal record when he watched child pornography one drizzly evening in May 2003 - and within minutes, he'd snatched a 10-year-old girl from the street and then sexually assaulted, strangled and dismembered her in a crime he described as ''cruel, inhuman and nightmarish.''

Briere, 36, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder in the sex slaying of Holly Jones.

His plea came a year after DNA evidence from a soda-pop can he tossed into a streetside recycling bin almost a month after Holly's abduction linked him to the murder of the cheerful schoolgirl who lived just blocks from his home.

The Montreal native wept in court as he apologized for acting out on what was described as his ''dark secret'' - his fantasy to have sex with a child. Holly's mother, Maria Jones, bowed her head and sobbed through most of his remarks.

New Paltz Mayor Dismissed of Criminal Charges for Marrying Same-Sex Couples

On June 10, New Paltz Town Court Justice Jonathan Katz dismissed criminal charges against New Paltz Mayor Jason West for marrying same-sex couples without a license, saying there was not substantial evidence to prove that the law West was charged with violating was constitutional.

Ulster County District Attorney Donald Williams said the issue was whether West broke the law, not the constitutional rights of the gay couples. He promised an appeal.

West faced 19 misdemeanor counts of solemnizing marriages for couples without a license since Feb.27 in the Hudson Valley village of New Paltz. If convicted, he could have faced up to one year in jail.

On June 8, Ulster County Supreme Court Justice Michael Kavanagh placed a permanent injunction to bar West from marrying same-sex couples.

The 27-year-old part-time mayor said that he has no plans to marry more couples until the injunction is overturned but did note that members of the clergy have been marrying same-sex couples in New Paltz since he bowed out.

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan - A gay journalist whose conviction for sodomy and having sex with minors has been internationally condemned as politically motivated may have to wait up to a month before his early release, a prison official said Saturday.

Demonstrators and human rights activists had gathered outside a Tashkent minimum-security prison where Ruslan Sharipov is being held, expecting him to be freed. Their protest was broken up by a plainclothes security officer, who pulled banners from their hands and broke them over his knee, shouting homosexual epithets as other police looked on.

Sharipov was convicted in August 2003 of sodomy, sex with minors and involving minors in anti-social behavior and sentenced to 5 1/2 years. An appeals court overturned the last charge in September and reduced the jail term to four years.

(AgapePress) - The mayor of New Paltz, New York has been ordered by a county Supreme Court judge to stop illegally solemnizing same-sex weddings.

Back in February, Jason West -- the part-time mayor of New Paltz, New York -- announced he would solemnize marriages of same-sex couples. Since then, he has continued the practice, despite being indicted for his actions.

However, Ulster County Supreme Court Judge E. Michael Kavanagh has now issued a permanent injunction ordering Mayor West to stop the practice. The injunction was issued in a lawsuit filed by Liberty Counsel on behalf of a member of the New Paltz Board of Trustees.

On February 27, West solemnized the “marriages” of 25 homosexual couples. He then created an “Affidavit of Marriage” and a “Contract of Marriage,” which he posted on the Internet and claimed he was issuing the documents “in lieu of a Certificate of Marriage” since the town clerk refused to issue a license. The mayor, a member of the Green Party, thought it “funny” that he had provoked such a controversy.

San Francisco Has Weak Defense of Same-Sex 'Marriage' Licenses

That Mayor Newsom and the clerk acted outside the law was made clear in the hearing.

The California Supreme Court heard oral arguments on May 25 regarding San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's issuance of illegal "marriage" licenses to 4,037 same-sex couples between February 2 and March 11.

The purpose of the hearing was to discuss whether Newsom exceeded his authority. The court may also decide whether the state should officially deem the licenses invalid.

Appearing before the seven justices at the hearing were Deputy Attorney General Timothy Muscat on behalf of the state (Lockyer v. San Francisco) and Jordan Lorence of Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) on behalf of San Francisco residents opposed to Newsom's failure to abide by the law (Lewis v. Alfaro). Chief Deputy City Attorney Therese Stewart represented Mayor Gavin Newsom and County Clerk Nancy Alfaro.

Allegiance to the Constitution or Rewriting the Law?
Lorence argued that the "problem with the logic that San Francisco has put forward is that it assumes that the statutes are unconstitutional and then makes a rather large leap…to say it has the authority to rewrite the state statutes the way the city thinks they should be."

NEWARK, N.J. -- A year after Sakia Gunn was slain, leading to an outpouring of gay pride and mourning for the 15-year-old lesbian, her former classmates plan to remember her Tuesday.

Gunn was stabbed to death last year waiting for a bus after she told her attacker that she and the friends he was propositioning were lesbians.

As her attacker awaits trial, Gunn's death continues to reverberate in the city, and a controversy is brewing over facilities for other gay and lesbian youth.

"People think about her, they start crying," said Marsh Padmore, a 19-year-old lesbian, who went to visit Gunn's grave Monday.

West Side High School, where Gunn was a sophomore, and Newark's 76 other public schools will hold a moment of silence at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, to remember her and five other students who died violent deaths in the past year, in an event known as No Name Calling Day.

Cross-dressers stealing cars for nightclub jaunts, police say

    Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A group of joyriders has been taking expensive new cars from Alabama dealerships, then driving them to cross-dressing pageants at nightclubs before abandoning them, police said.

The thieves apparently just want the cars to drive to the clubs. "I guess they just wanted to look good when they got there," Birmingham auto theft Sgt. D.P. Smith said Monday.

The group has been giving dealers the slip in lots in Tuscaloosa, Selma, Montgomery, Huntsville and Birmingham. Investigators have recovered about 10 to 15 cars in Birmingham and as far away as New Orleans and Memphis, Tenn. Police also have the keys to at least 20 others.

"We need all dealerships to do an inventory of their keys and their cars. Cars may be missing, and they may not even know it," Smith said.

The openly gay New Democrat was in self-imposed exile in Vancouver as his private member's bill jumped the last major hurdle to becoming law. Senators voted 59-11 to pass the bill as applause echoed through the ornate red chamber. It now requires only royal assent.

It was a rare feat for an opposition MP but a mixed triumph. Robinson took a medical leave from his parliamentary duties this month after admitting he stole an expensive ring.

A huge child pornography bust nationwide resulted in 140 arrests nationwide - 56 of them from the North Texas area.

Dallas Police and FBI agents collected more than 23,000 names over the last two years as part of "Operation Site-Key." Police said the suspects were allegedly logging onto the Internet, and then using their credit cards to view illegal Web sites.

For years, Dallas detectives tediously tracked down people who accessed sites that contained child pornography.

"These file cabinets are loaded with some of these cases," said Dallas Police Lt. Bill Walsh. "Just on and on and on."
