Randy Thomas on California's Gay Marriage Ruling

Exodus Executive Vice President Randy Thomas responds on his blog to the historic ruling by the California Supreme Court overturning a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage:

Exodus has been on record as opposing the redefinition of , the use of hate crimes legislation to suppress freedom of conscience and religious liberty as well as , the corporate version of hate crimes.  is another example of the state forcing a state sanctioned sexual morality at the expense of religious liberty.

has only been involved in these public battles for the past five years and while we have very strong beliefs, I think it is a mistake for Christians to believe that Joe Solomnese, a gay identified man in charge of the HRC (largest gay lobby in the world) wants to proverbially burn Christians at the stake.  While he has been dismissive of my life and testimony, I choose not to be dismissive of his because I once believed as he does.  My only desire was to live in a homosexual relationship.

Alan Chambers in New Man Magazine

New Man: You struggled with same-sex attraction yourself. Did that experience lead you to the ministry you’re in today?

Alan Chambers: Definitely. When I was growing up the only thing you ever heard about from the Bible regarding homosexuals was that they don’t inherit the kingdom of God. That’s the one thing that rings in my head from childhood. So when I found out that there was a local Exodus ministry, that there was help for people like me, I jumped at it.

New Man: So years later you have come back to be the president of Exodus?

Chambers: Yes, I’m the president of Exodus. Really from the time I was 18 until now—I’m 36—I’ve never left the ministry. I started out as someone who was participating and someone who needed help and then I was a volunteer, than on staff at a local ministry and worked through the ranks and to where I am now.

New Man: Your ministry is inherently controversial. You have been interviewed by a number of news outlets and you’re unapologetic about trying to change homosexuals. What is your response to someone who says, “They can’t change”?

Chambers: Well my first response is that we don’t change people. I want to be very clear about that. We are people who simply point to the truth and Scripture, to the truth of our testimonies and to the grace of a God who promises He’ll free anyone who submits his will to His Lordship. It will be different for different people. I know a lot of people that didn’t experience a change in their feelings. They didn’t experience the same freedom I did, which is sometimes hard to understand.

Touch the Sexual Sinner

Mike Ensley wrote this new article for Boundless:

Nobody needs to be told about the startling statistics regarding youth and sexuality. A rant about how the media and entertainment industry push the envelope would just be stating the obvious to anyone with ears to listen.

What gets me ranting is the Church's response; all too often living in the definition of insanity in regards to responding to the crisis of our culture. Despite its monumental failure to accomplish anything in the way of personal transformation, too many Christians — worse, those in ministry — seem bent on responding with our most ineffective asset: religion.

GSA Clubs and Social Activism

From CitizenLink:

The Gay-Straight Alliance Network (GSA) is doing its best to make sure high schools use next week — the so-called Freedom to Marry Week — to rally support among students for same-sex "marriage." Schools are encouraged to feature mock weddings, guest speakers, teach-ins and a movie night with gay-themed films.

Randy Thomas, executive vice president with Exodus International, said the agenda is clear.

“GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) and GSA groups are all about indoctrinating our young people to a gay worldview," he told Family News in Focus. "And now they’re not settling for just indoctrinating young people, they’re trying to turn them into activists.”

Teen-Targeted Books Promote Alcohol, Drugs and Sexual Experimentation

From WorldNetDaily:

Publishers Weekly calls it "A nasty, guilty pleasure." So what is this book filled with shocking profanity, characters guzzling alcohol and smoking cigarettes throughout, taking illegal drugs, glorifying hedonism and selfishness, and where sex (including homosexuality) is always on their minds? Is this book and others like it tucked away at an "adult bookstore"? No, it is a novel from the No. 1 best-selling series titled "Gossip Girl," and it is probably at your local library and bookstore in the teen section. Teen People magazine dubs these books "'Sex and the City' for the younger set."

In addition, groups that promote homosexuality to youth also offer dangerous influence through reading materials. GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), which is the group behind the Gay-Straight Alliance club network, promotes a list of gay-affirming reading materials for students. Here are some of the selections they suggest for 7th to 12th grade readers.

Revolutionary Voices by Amy Sonnie is comprised of interviews with LGBT-identified youth from around the globe. One of the individuals showcased describes “his journey into sex work as a way of uplifting his self esteem.” The interview talks about how “doing sex work in drag” and sadomasochism can be “empowering” experiences.

Free Your Mind by Ellen Bass and Kate Kaufman is a guide-to-life for youth who think they may be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. In truth, this book is full of deceptive, dangerous advice. Teens are encouraged to find “meaningful” new “relationships” via gay and lesbian chat rooms on the internet. The book also greatly overstates the protection offered by condoms, and lists “bathing together” and mutual masturbation as “safe” sexual practices.

Find out what books are available to teens in your public schools and libraries. If the only books addressing these topics are like the ones listed above, consider donating books from the Exodus Bookstore, so they will be available to questioning teens who go browsing in the libraries for answers.

Pride and Prejudice: Montel Williams Style

By Alan Chambers:

So, Montel Williams has a temper.

While in Savannah to promote a program offering free prescriptions to those with low incomes, the talk-show host blew up at Courtney Scott, a high school intern at the Savannah Morning News, when she asked him, "Do you think pharmaceutical companies would be discouraged from research and development if their profits were restricted?" Williams terminated the interview and later said to Scott, "Do you know who I am? I'm a big star, and I can look you up, find where you live and blow you up." He has since apologized.

Some might be surprised by the Montel's irrational outburst. I'm not. I was a guest on his show this past March and witnessed the same pride as well as an ample display of his prejudice.

Bible/Homosexuality Film Stirs Debate

From Baptist Press:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Few issues are as controversial as the Bible and homosexuality, and a new documentary on that subject is receiving thumbs down from orthodox Christians -- and garnering its own controversy in the process.

"For the Bible Tells Me So" is a 90-minute, one-sided film focusing on five families who profess to be Christians and who have a homosexual family member. For the most part the families' stories reflect the documentary's message: The Bible has been misinterpreted over the centuries and homosexuality is not a sin.

"There's nothing wrong with a fifth-grade understanding of God, as long as you're in the fifth grade," one liberal pastor says in the movie.

Director Daniel Karslake and his film crew interviewed such notables as former Democratic House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt -- who is promoting the film and who has a lesbian daughter -- and Gene Robinson, the first openly homosexual Episcopal bishop. Not surprisingly, the documentary throws in a few scenes showing Fred Phelps' infamous church of "God Hates Fags" fame, picketing.

It has won a handful of awards, including the Audience Winner for best documentary at the Seattle International Film Festival, and it has the backing of the homosexual group Soulforce, which promotes so-called "pro-gay" interpretations of Scripture and which has posted the trailer on its website. The film is not being distributed widely, but media critics nonetheless are raving about it and essentially urging readers to support it. That has become part of the controversy, too.

The Seattle Times' Moira Macdonald called it an "inspiring" film about "acceptance" that "may well leave you blinking away a few tears." The documentary, she said in her Oct. 26 review, shows clergy and religious scholars "calmly rebutting literalist interpretations of Scripture."

Not to be outdone, The Tennessean's Bill Friskics-Warren wrote a 1,400-word review of the movie for page one of the Nov. 18 Issues section, asserting that "nowhere ... does the Bible say anything, much less condemn, loving and committed partnerships between same-sex adults." Scholars, he argued, "tell us that these passages have nothing to do with sexual orientation as we've come to understand it." Friskics-Warren even listed a few Bible verses he said are misinterpreted.

"The use of Scripture to justify discrimination began long before the current dispute about what the Bible does or doesn't say about homosexuality," he wrote.

Both reviews included information on when and where to watch the film.

The Tennessean's one-sided review received so much reaction that a week later it published three columns by Christians from the opposing viewpoint.

"While there may be a few idiots like Fred Phelps among us, most Christians oppose homosexuality with a degree of humility," wrote Kevin Shrum, pastor of Inglewood Baptist Church in Nashville. "... Someone asked me one time, 'Pastor, what would you do if you had a homosexual family member?' My answer is that I do. And when I see her, I hug her, love her, pray for her, talk to her, laugh with her, listen to her and long to see her 'come out' of a lifestyle that appears to be miserable, abnormal and destructive."

Is Change Possible... for Sheep?

From Earthtimes.org:

NEW YORK: Experiments conducted by scientists to change the sexuality of homosexual sheep have drawn ire from gay and lesbian activists. They are afraid the efforts could lead to extinction of homosexuality in humans.

The experiments have been approved by the government as farmers complained they are financially affected when one in 10 rams, on average, is gay. After extensive studies of the brains of the homosexual rams, scientists at the Oregon State University have been able to identify the processes that influence their sexual orientation.

These rams were given injections so that the levels of hormones in the brains responsible for the orientation were adjusted with the result that some of the previously gay rams started interacting with ewes.

Former Wimbledon champion Martina Navaratilova, who is a self-admitted lesbian, described the efforts as "homophobic." A gay rights activist likened the experiments to Nazi research in the early 1940s which aimed at eradicating homosexuality. He described them as eugenics.

The scientists said their research is confined to reducing or eliminating gay sheep. Charles Roselli, a biologist leading the research team, said sexuality has been an under-studied subject because of political concerns.

"It's a touchy issue. In fact, several studies have shown that people who believe homosexuality is biologically based are less homophobic than people who think that this orientation is acquired," he said.

He said any possible applications of his research to humans were not a matter for him.

Gay activists say the simplicity of the process in altering the hormonal balance of the brain could become easily applicable to humans, when research can be conducted and methods devised to screen unborn children for 'gayness' and even parents resorting to treat their children to become heterosexual.

For a long time it has seemed that the gay activists' message to us was that homosexuality was biologically determined and therefore immutable. So why would they oppose research which, though it has nothing to do with human social politics, would seem to prove that homosexuality is biological, at least in animals?

It appears that the true distillation of the gay activist's platform is this: same-sex attracted people have to be gay. Whether there is a path to freedom from homosexuality through relational growth and counseling or even medical/hormonal treatment, they're against it. Why can't they accept the possibility of a choice?

It's becoming more common to hear activists say even if being gay was a choice, they would choose it because it's such a good life. This is a powerful argument, but it simply isn't true.  The fact is, nobody wants to be gay.The reason these extremists react so strongly to the discoveries of a specific cause (which they seem to have wanted) is because they know that if an easy way out was found, people would be leaving the gay lifestyle in droves; nothing would be a bigger disaster for pro-homosexual ideology and political power.

Another point this brings up is the absolute hypocrisy of these activists who, while condemning any remote possibility of "treating" homosexuality medically or psychologically, support and celebrate drug treatments and even surgery aimed at changing the gender of confused adolescents and children.

On The Radio - J.T. Foxx Show

***Scroll Down For Update***

I will be on the J.T. Foxx Show Sunday (tomorrow).  It's on News-Talk WIND 560 AM station in Chicago.  You can listen live here.  I will be listening in around 8:30-ish am EDT CDT and will be on sometime in the 9 o'clock hour 8:45 CDT (it's only and hour long show.)  The first part of the show will have Shirley Phelps-Roper and a local politician who had a gay son who died of AIDS.

I have a feeling my heart is going to be broken on so many levels before I ever actually get on the show.

However, I am very excited that during the time that I am on there will also be a VERY popular gay blogger on as well.  I won't mention who it is until after the show.

***After the Show Update***

Well, Mrs. Phelps-Roper was still screaming whenever they called and plugged me in.  I was originally slated to be in the last 20 minutes of the show.  Her segment ran over for 10 minutes so when I finally got on it was very quick and brief.  The host was very gracious and basically described Exodus for the audience and asked me what I thought of the Phelps message.  I say what I usually say and think is important:  the Phelps crew and I do NOT serve the same God and it is obvious that they do not know the Christ I serve.

'Hate Crime' Laws: An Assault on Freedom

http://www.cwfa.org/articles/2575/CFI/papers/index.htm

"

Although well intentioned, ''hate-crime'' laws are seriously flawed.

"Hate crime" laws pose a danger to civil liberties in three ways:

  • They pave the way for suppression of the freedoms of speech, association and religion.
  • They violate the concept of equal protection under the law.
  • They introduce the un-American concept of "thought crime," in which someone's actions are "more" illegal based on their thoughts or beliefs.

A grandmother walking down the street should have at least as much protection under the law as someone who is leaving a "gay" bar. But under "hate crimes" laws that include "sexual orientation," the same assault would be punished with greater penalties if the victim were perceived as homosexual."- Robert H. Knight, CWA.org, Sept. 27, 2005

Who Cares about Homosexual Marriage? God Does!

http://www.cwfa.org/articles/9249/CWA/family/index.htm

"

Recently, a doctor friend of mine told me of a conversation with a colleague about the present debate over homosexual marriages. The colleague had said: “Well, who really cares? It really is a private personal matter, isn’t it?” My friend was not sure how to respond. He was a bit caught short when I suggested, “God cares!”

Today the whole question of this change in the understanding of the nature of marriage and of human sexuality is discussed from numerous angles. For some, the conflict is a moral issue; for others, a legal or political issue. For still others, it’s a matter of changing social customs and a social institution. If no intelligent Creator God made all things nor had rational purposes when he designed us, then such thinking is understandable. With no design in life, we are left on our own. If, however, there is a God who intentionally made us male and female, then he really should not be left out of the discussion. In fact, what he thinks may be the missing element in all the confusion, the key we need in the chaos. If the Bible is correct, human sexuality and marriage are more theology than biology, sociology, law, or even morality. "- Dr. Dennis Kinlaw, Concerned Women for America, Oct. 25, 2005

Becoming Out

http://www.drthrockmorton.com/article.asp?id=171

"Sheryl Swoopes is arguably the finest female basketball player ever...So when she came out of the closet recently, there was excitement in the gay and lesbian community about a high profile public figure declaring herself a lesbian...Her story was featured in a recent ESPN magazine article where she said about her sexuality: “I didn't always know I was gay. I honestly didn't. Do I think I was born this way? No. And that's probably confusing to some, because I know a lot of people believe that you are.”...The notion that people attracted to the same sex might not be wired that way from birth is more than confusing to some gay activists. It makes them indignant. When psychologist Bill Maier of Focus on the Family suggested the exact same viewpoint to the Washington Times several months ago, Ron Schlittler officer with Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays said in reply that such views advance "baseless fears and misguided claims about [homosexuals].”- Warren Throckmorton, PhD, Nov. 4, 2005

Judaism's Sexual Revolution: Why Judaism (and then Christianity) Rejected Homosexuality

http://www.orthodoxytoday.org/articles2/PragerHomosexuality.shtml

"When Judaism demanded that all sexual activity be channeled into marriage, it changed the world. The Torah's prohibition of non-marital sex quite simply made the creation of Western civilization possible. Societies that did not place boundaries around sexuality were stymied in their development. The subsequent dominance of the Western world can largely be attributed to the sexual revolution initiated by Judaism and later carried forward by Christianity."- Dennis Prager, OrthodoxyToday.org

Same-Sex “Marriage” to “Usher in an Era of Intolerance and Discrimination the Likes of Which We Have Rarely Seen Before,”

http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2005/sep/05092901.html

"In a pastoral letter published in the Calgary Sun on September 11, Bishop Henry warned that “Same-sex marriage proponents use the language of openness, tolerance and diversity, yet the foreseeable effect of their success will be to usher in an era of intolerance and discrimination the likes of which we have rarely seen before.”

He warned that same-sex “marriage” and relations will be considered the norm, and that any school, for example, that fails to incorporate homosexual relations into their curricula, will be deemed discriminatory. “The impact of the social re-engineering is bound to filter down to school classrooms,” he wrote. “The educational impact of laws on attitudes is undeniable. Ordinary words such as ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ will be replaced by ‘partner’ and ‘spouse.’ Children will have to be taught about homosexual acts. Every person and every religion that disagrees will be labelled as bigoted and openly discriminated against and dragged before Human Rights Commissions. Parents who complain will be branded as homophobes and their children will suffer.”- LifeSiteNews.com, Sept. 29, 2005

"THE CHURCH of Nigeria is an Evangelical Church. It upholds the authority of scripture and is unreservedly committed to mission and evangelism that results in conversion of people to the Lord, church-planting and the caring ministry. In this Church, we teach about the total depravity of man and his absolute need for salvation through faith in Jesus the Christ. For us, therefore, adherence to scripture is not only paramount, it is also non-negotiable. In matters of faith and practice, scripture provides sufficient warrant for what is considered right and what is judged to be wrong.
In recent times, we have been told that the issue of homosexuality is relative. We believe it is not a relative matter. In the context of our part of the Church and society, we see it as a behaviour that is expressly forbidden and roundly condemned in scripture."- Peter Akinola, Archbishop and Primate of Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion.

An overview of the case in Montgomery County, Maryland regarding a sex education curriculum presented by an advisory committee which was stricken down by Federal District Judge Alexander Williams Jr.

Professor Arkes posed this question:

"Do liberals want to break through conventions with "sex education"? Then education it should be: The life-shortening hazards of homosexual behavior should be conveyed, along with information about the other hazards of incautious sex; the record of conversions from the homosexual life should be put in texts along with the inconclusive arguments over the "gay gene."

I find elite socialist liberals to be amongst other things, a curious lot. Not because of what they stand for as such, but because of what they don't stand for when it pertains to them. They pontificate about what should be and must be for others, but the question that begs an answer is: Does their feigned social altruism apply to them?

In all the states where gay marriage was on the ballot this year, the voters voted against it -- as they should have.

Of all the phony arguments for gay marriage, the phoniest is the argument that it is a matter of equal rights. Marriage is not a right extended to individuals by the government. It is a restriction on the rights they already have

The initial perspective in psychology was to treat homosexuality. Later, researchers who were mostly gays or lesbians carried out studies to prove the normality of homosexuality and gay affirmative psychology was developed.

Surviving as the School 'Sinner'

In the face of the hubbub at a Catholic school in which two Orange County gay men enrolled their adopted sons, I could not help but recall my experiences at Catholic school in Cleveland in the early 1970 as the child of divorced parents. The question for me is not will the boys' mere presence harm the school but will the school harm them?

In the '70s, divorce was the big no-no. My mother was the first one in her Sicilian (read twice as intense) Roman Catholic family to get one, and the church excommunicated her. Because my father was a gambling addict who missed enough house payments to incur an eviction notice, the divorce didn't upset my grandparents that much. But knowing their daughter could never again receive Communion nearly killed them.

'Philadelphia Four' drawing nat'l attention

NOW HERE'S a fine kettle of fishes and loaves.

The plight of Christian fundamentalists charged with disrupting "Outfest," last October's gay block party, has become a national cause celebre.

The "Philadelphia Four" are a hot topic on Christian radio, on the Internet and on conservative talk shows.

The national Fox News show "The O'Reilly Factor" debated the case on Monday.

Sources say the office of District Attorney Lynne Abraham, which is prosecuting the group, has been hit with obscene and anti-Semitic phone calls.

At the heart of the dispute is Michael Marcavage, 25, of Lansdowne, who heads a group called "Repent America.

Close to 2,000 gay-straight clubs have been established in high schools around the country, and even middle schools. This is bad news indeed as we see the escalation of sexual experimentation among our youth.

Not long ago a flurry of stories appeared concerning the growing problem of oral sex in middle schools. Even Oprah covered it. Youngsters interviewed thought they could still qualify as "virgins" while engaging in immoral and highly risky behavior. (Thank you, Bill Clinton.) What kids don't know and aren't being told is that oral sex has serious consequences including the risk of developing throat cancer and contracting sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes and AIDS.

Now is the Time to Debate Homosexual Marriage in Maine

Released 1/6/05

AUGUSTA, MAINE --“While the Christian Civic League of Maine in no way supports Rep. Brian Duprey’s bill legalizing homosexual marriage, we welcome the opportunity to candidly debate this very important moral and social issue in the public arena,” said Tim Russell, Legislative Liaison for the Christian Civic League. “The League does commend Rep. Duprey for his integrity in bringing this legislation forward as a “by request” bill. While obviously not supporting the legalization of homosexual marriage, it does show his statesmanship and commitment to representing all of his constituents, ensuring the political process is a level playing field for everyone and not just those who are in control.”

Divorce and Same-Sex ‘Marriage’

BreakPoint with Charles Colson

January 4, 2005

Note: This commentary was delivered by Prison Fellowship President Mark Earley.

On Election Day, initiatives defining marriage as one man and one woman passed overwhelmingly in all eleven states that had them on the ballot. But this victory isn’t necessarily permanent. Unless we continue to make a compelling case for the sanctity of marriage, public opinion is quite likely to drift in the other direction.

And it’s going to be increasingly difficult to make that case unless we deal with some of the skeletons in our own closet.

The psychological strategy of the homosexual lobby

I take issue with the recent discussion describing Jamaican people who see homosexuality as dysfunctional or deviant as being sick people. This is what is done when one subscribes to the concept of "homophobia".

Once persons refuse to accept the agenda that homosexuality is normal and healthy behaviour, they are labelled as sick, they have a phobia. How did we get into this mess?

TV networks show 'cowardice, pure and simple'

In my view, one of the best and most provocative regular features offered up by the Pilot is the commentary by a cross-section of local religious leaders on some of the pithier moral issues of the day. Their opinions are mostly straight to the point — and not always predictable.

Even though two of their number opted out, I was especially pleased that the other three tackled the recent refusal of several major TV networks to run a commercial on behalf of the United Church of Christ. In case you missed the dispute, the commercial rejected by ABC, NBC and CBS shows a pair of bouncers in front of an unidentified church picking and choosing the people they allow to enter, followed by the tagline: "Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we." The reference is primarily aimed at churches that reject gay people unwilling to accept celibacy as a condition for membership, a restriction that doesn't exist at the United Church of Christ.

Tributes to Reggie White Show Incomplete Picture

[NOTE: It is likely that few, if any, of us personally knew Reggie White. It is therefore difficult to say with any certainty what his motives were in his speech to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1998. However, I personally see no reason to doubt that they were for any other reason than his agreement with scripture.

While some people may believe that he could have said it more tactfully, I sincerely doubt that had he delivered the same basic message in a more "pleasant" tone, that those in opposition to his message would have been any less virulant in their current response.]

Reggie White's death on Sunday prompted a case of one-sided history on the CBS and Fox pregame shows, which remembered him as a great football player but an even greater man, and a man loved by everyone.

White might have deserved much of the praise, but it was the type of unabashed admiration that prompts concern that the stars and producers of the programs forgot or, worse, ignored how White denounced homosexuality and traded in ethnic stereotypes in a speech to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1998.

The Kinky Report

Alfred C. Kinsey is the Left’s secular saint – a revered figure who, they are convinced, came into a benighted world and (armed with reams of scientific research) heroically banished ignorance and sexual repression, and ushered in a new age of liberation, enlightenment, and pleasure.

In reality, the zoologist turned sex researcher was a sick pervert – more at home in a trench coat than a lab smock – who doctored evidence, abetted child molestation, and helped to launch a revolution that has resulted in untold human suffering.

But try telling that to one who worships at the altar of good sex. It’s less hazardous to disparage the pope to an Opus Dei Catholic, or burn the flag at an American Legion convention, than to question the nobility of Kinsey with a doctrinaire liberal.

CBS and NBC could not have done the United Church of Christ a bigger favor than when they decided against running an advertisement for the church on their networks.

TWO lawsuits were filed last week against the United States military. In one, eight soldiers are challenging an Army policy that extended their tours of duty in the Middle East. They are suing to get out of military service. In the other suit, 12 gay and lesbian veterans are challenging the decade-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy that bars known gays from serving in the armed forces. They are suing to get back into the military.

The connection between the two suits may be more than coincidental. An analysis of Pentagon data reveals that the military is losing gay troops in the occupational areas where shortfalls are most dire. In addition to the "stop loss" orders that prompted last week's lawsuit, the Pentagon has recalled thousands of former troops from civilian life to fill these gaps.

I remember the graffiti on a wall in Leeds. "My mother made me a lesbian"; and underneath: "If I gave her the wool would she make me one?"

Thirty years since homosexuality was removed from the list of recognised mental disorders, scientists persist in searching for a "cause", refusing to accept that sexuality and sexual desire are social constructs, not biological or genetically determined.

King vs. King

The sight of the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. standing at her father's grave site with thousands of demonstrators to denounce gay marriage was painful. The Rev. Bernice King and march organizers deliberately chose King's resting place in Atlanta to imply that he would have stood with them. But Martin Luther King's uncompromising battle against discrimination during his life -- and his persistent refusal to distance himself from a well-known gay civil rights leader -- show that King never would have endorsed an anti-gay campaign.

A Gay Marriage Success Story

Some time during the late 1980s, some guy (I don't remember who) from some conservative think tank (Cato? Hoover?) asked me at some Washington reception whether the New Republic, where I worked as the editor, would be interested in publishing an article advocating gay marriage. It was the first that I had heard of the idea.

At the time, the virtue of marriage as a civilizer of men was a major conservative theme in the debate about the underclass. This fellow wanted to argue that if marriage turned a man from a rampaging animal into a productive member of society, it would be especially useful when both members of the couple were these uncivilized beasts. Encouraging stable and monogamous relationships was especially important, he noted, in the age of AIDS.

The Gay Agenda vs. Family Values

We were in elementary school – morning recess by the jungle gym.  My buddy Kyle presided over the ceremony.  I was the groom and Karen Smith was the blushing bride.  The mock wedding lasted about three minutes.  The mock marriage lasted about half-a-day.  Oh, I was faithful…until Christina McCarroll caught my wandering eye during Math class.  Of course we weren’t really married – we were fourth graders – but we sure had fun pretending.

Flash forward about twenty-five years – San Francisco, CA – An activist Mayor, Gavin Newsom, taunts the State’s voters and defiles both the rule of law and the sanctity of marriage as he cons thousands of “same-sex couples,” including the corpulent Queen of crass herself, Rosie O’Donnell, into taking part in a number of mock weddings held in San Francisco’s City Hall.  Of course they weren’t really married – but they sure seemed to have fun pretending.

No Dogs Or God Allowed!

http://www.americandaily.com/article/5952

By Dave Gibson (12/09/04)

Before any of us were born, signs which read 'No Dogs or Indians Allowed' were displayed on buildings throughout this nation's western states. A few decades ago, signs which read 'Whites Only' hung on the walls of businesses throughout the South. The federal government made that kind of discrimination illegal.

However, there is another type of discrimination on the rise in America. Religious bigotry is alive and well, and it is in large measure directed toward Christians. While the bias now being felt by Christian Americans is unjust and damaging (not only to Christians but to the entire country), don't look for the federal government to interject their power on behalf of Christians as they did for blacks.

As a mental health counselor, I am really troubled by the numbers of adolescents that I have counseled who cried for days and hurt for years because they engaged in "safer sex" within dead end, unfulfilling relationships. Sadly, they learned that “safer sex” can be hazardous to their emotional health.

I think the current political debate concerning abstinence vs. contraceptive based sexual education has failed to include an important variable in the discussion of what to teach in school: sexual well being.

Joseph Hughes, a writer on DemocraticUnderground.com, had this to say in his article, "I Subscribe to the Homosexual Agenda":

"I also subscribe to Newsweek and Spin, for what it's worth. Seriously, though, I am so tired of hearing bigotry masquerade as "values," hatred as "compassion." I'll be blunt: If you do not accept homosexuality, do not think that gays should marry, you are a bigot. You're not old fashioned. You're also not Christian. Again, you are a bigot. And an idiot. And I'm tired of people not calling things what they are."

Should a Journalist Be Associated With an Advocacy Group?

In Friday's S.F. Chronicle Open Forum, Steven Petrow, past president of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, wrote that his group seeks equal, not "special coverage."  His column made be wonder why a reporter would want to be identified with an advocacy group.

I retired from journalism in 2000 after a 40-year career. When I entered, it was difficult to get people to join the union because many thought signing on would compromise their objectivity. Now it seems every reporter belongs to some group that wants to ensure it receives fair coverage.

However, I don't think there is a group for "Journalists of Faith."  I doubt if an organization that wanted to make sure "straights" had fair coverage would be welcomed.  By the way, where did the term "straight" come from? I can't recall heterosexuals being polled about this.

Time for serious gay debate

HOMOSEXUALITY IS one subject which demands attention to philosophy and most people's incompetence in this area is excruciatingly and agonisingly evident in the puerile discussion which usually takes place on the subject.

The most philosophically incompetent, of course, fall back on prejudice, bigotry, received tradition, culture and religion to argue their case. Others simply argue from their own physiological urges and desires, narcissism and anti-religious biases. Most of the arguments I hear for and against homosexuality are facile, preposterous and glandular. It is not just the flaming Fundamentalists and culturally prejudiced anti-gay persons, but gay persons themselves are usually given more to emotive argumentation rather than reason.

UCC Ad Commentaries

Here are two commentaries on the controversy surrounding the United Church of Christ advertisement, which was rejected by the major broadcast networks. The first appears in the LA Times, supporting the airing of the adverts and was written by Madison Shockley, minister of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad, CA. It is titled "Since When Does Conflict Turn Off the Networks?"

The second is from Christianity Today's weblog editor, Ted Olsen, and appears in yesterday's CT weblog. His commentary is an exploration of some of the surrounding issues that many Christians find offensive, beyond just the secular take on the church/homosexual inclusion issue.

When Being Gay is not so Merry & Bright

When Being Gay is not so Merry & Bright

Orlando, FL - December 3, 2004 Young men and women today are being subtly seduced to "come out of the closet" by the bright depictions of gay life. They are told of the close community spirit where all are welcome and accepted just as they are. The media writes stories about wholesome gay families where monogamous partnerships exist and children are nurtured. It seems as if a gay Utopia has been found where every problem young people experience with family or in society will be corrected.

As a result of this PR campaign, many young people break ties with family and friends. They walk away from their belief systems in favor of gay acceptance. At first it seems as if gay Utopia is a real place. There is an abundance of "new" friends and a new "family" system which seems promising. There are plenty of invitations and potentially exciting new adventures...for a time at least... until reality sets in...the reality that two emotionally broken partners do not equal one emotionally whole relationship.

Unfortunately the damage does not end with the dawning of harsh reality. By the time enlightenment occurs, many have burned relational bridges with God, parents, siblings, wives and children. Bitterness, loneliness, isolation and fear are the components of their lives at this point. And, as if this is not sad enough, what does the future hold for the aging gay? What will gay life be like when this young person is 70 instead of 17?

In a recent article [Aging Gays Face Problems, Isolation, Loneliness, Fear by Elise Kleeman, ] The following survey results were reported.

- 45 percent of respondents live alone.
- Those living alone reported poorer overall health and a higher rate of
physical limitations.
- They were not as happy, more likely to find the things they did boring, and sensed more age discrimination.
- Loss of independence was the primary concern of LGBT seniors as they age.
- 14 percent said they did not know where they would turn for future personal assistance needs.
- 21 percent said they would use agencies or paid professionals. The percentages were even higher when considering just those seniors living alone.
- 22 percent did not feel comfortable being 'out' to their healthcare provider.
- When asked about senior residence facilities, acceptance by other residents and hostility of service providers were the biggest concerns.
- 60 percent of respondents were interested in LGBT senior housing options.

What is left for aging gays? Does it mean that they are doomed to misery and despair? Are they condemned to living out their lives feeling abandoned, abused, afraid and insecure?

Absolutely not! God's benefits are new every morning for those of us who have turned from our sin issues and seek His will. Thousands of men and women who once lived as gays and lesbians are now free from that misery and living in hope. Many of them have happy heterosexual marriages and children. All of them have the security that they are loved, forgiven, accepted and protected by God. For them misery, fear and despair are things of the past.

The answer to finding this peace is repentance, trust in God, and obedience to Him; always remembering that He has promised us that we are His glory.

"I knew you would turn against me; you have fought against
me since you were born. But for my own sake I will be patient. People will praise me for not becoming angry and destroying you. I have made y
